Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression is a non-surgical therapy to treat chronic back and neck pain associated with spinal disc problems. In the most basic terms, spinal decompression therapy is advanced technology “traction” combined with a much better understanding of human physiology. Back Pain is often caused by misalignment in the spine. The treatment alternates between gentle stretching and relaxation to realign the spine while enhancing the body’s natural healing process. At the same time, the negative pressure creates an opportunity for water, oxygen, and nutrients to be drawn back into the disc. It also distracts the spinal joints which gives them more mobility and stretches the spinal muscles and ligaments which in turn allows them to relax.

What is Spinal Decompression recommended for?

  • Chronic back and neck pain
  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Sciatica
  • Arm/pain numbness
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative discs
  • Worn spinal joints
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
  • Arthritis
  • Pinched Nerves

It is important to remember however, that pain subsiding does not infer that your discs and spine are healed, so it’s critical that patients stick with the treatment protocol prescribed by their practitioner in order to achieve the full value of your the therapy.

Are there any side effects? Most patients do not experience any side effects. Though, there have been some mild cases of muscle spasm for a short period of time.

Can Spinal Decompression be used for patients that have had spinal surgery? In most cases Spinal Decompression treatment is not contra-indicated for patients that have had spinal surgery. In fact many patients have found success with spinal decompression after a failed back surgery.

Foot & Ankle (Chiropody)

Chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases or disorders of the foot by therapeutic, orthotic and palliative means. The importance of foot problems should not be underestimated. Foot deformities, infections and injuries not only limit your mobility, but can detrimentally affect your knees, hips, and other parts of the body.

What does a chiropodist do?

Chiropodists specialize in the recognition, assessment, treatment and ongoing care of the foot. An essential member of the health care team, the chiropodist uses many skills and techniques to help patients eliminate foot pain, gain mobility and maintain healthy feet. Chiropodists treat the following conditions:

  • Sports injuries
  • Common foot conditions such as corns, warts, ingrown toenails or calluses
  • Foot infections caused by medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Foot deformities and misalignments both in adults and children

Corrective Exercises

At Active Family Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, we teach our patients how to perform special "blueprint" exercises which can help strengthen and correct the irregularities in their body which may be causing pain. Many of these corrective exercises can actually be performed in the comfort of your own home to help improve the effectiveness of your chiropractic care and spinal correction plan. In addition to skeletal misalignment, you may be experiencing pain that is caused by muscles and connective tissues which are out of their proper place. Other types of pain such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches are caused by muscles and tissues that are being used improperly, causing injuries over time. In each case, targeted corrective exercises and stretches from our experienced chiropractor will help you feel good while also helping your body achieve balance and health.

Lifestyle Advice

Many of our patients come to see our chiropractor to address a specific pain symptom such as back pain, neck pain or headaches. While our chiropractor will address each patient's specific condition with chiropractic care, we often find it helpful to "coach" our patients towards achieving a healthier lifestyle. For example, there may be certain activities that you should avoid or do differently to prevent yourself from unintentionally aggravating your particular health challenges. The goal of including lifestyle advice with a chiropractic care plan is to help each and every patient achieve the fulfilling and happy lifestyle they deserve, one that is full of the activities that are enjoyed most. We recognize that every single one of our patients is a whole person, and we use our expertise to help them reach total health and wellness.

Nutritional Counseling

What does nutrition have to do with chiropractic care? The goal of chiropractic care is to help patients achieve total health and balance with their body, and as part of that goal we provide specific recommendations on nutritional supplements and healthy food choices. Nutritional counseling by our experienced chiropractic health professionals can assist a patient on their return to optimal health. Do you know which supplements and vitamins are good for you? Do you know how these supplements and vitamins interact with one another? At our Mississauga chiropractic clinic, we can provide each patient with a structured nutritional program that is based on their individual needs.

Spinal & Postural Screenings

There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Your spinal health is no exception. Posture and spinal screenings by trained and experienced chiropractors such as Dr. Ongko & Dr. Pacis can help reveal important health information, unlocking the door to improved health and well-being. In order to help the Mississauga community, we provide screenings at community events, health fairs and places of employment. Contact us today at (905) 821-4951 to arrange a screening at your event or workplace.
