Variety is Key to Healthy Eating

Variety is the Key to Healthy Eating

Research has shown the link between what we consume and the vitality of our health.   The food that we eat is connected with the causation or the prevention of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

How de we eat in such a way as to feed our vitality?  The answer is not simple, but there are some clues of what we should be looking for.  The most obvious aspect one should be looking for is a multitude of colors in the food that we eat.   Much is known about the importance of vegetables or fruits in a healthy diet.  Research has shown that the many colors of vegetables and fruits indicate the variety of phytonutrients that is within that food.  The human brain is incredibly adept at identifying the many beautiful colors, texture, patterns, smell and taste of food.  It is up to us to include as many variety of those vegetables and fruits.  We should not only eat those few favorites that we like, but also include food that we don’t usually put into our mouth.  So, we need to consume a variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and other plant-based food if we are to live a long, healthy life.

For many years, the traditional Okinawan diet has been researched to determine the reason for the longevity of the Okinawan population.  Upon closer inspection, the Okinawan diet gives us clues as to the reason.   30 percent of the Okinawan diet includes green and yellow vegetables.  Purple fleshed sweet potato is a main staple.  Okinawans eat Fish and pork in moderation.  Research has noted that Okinawans have on average eight times less likelihood to die from heart disease and 2.5 times less likely to die from colon cancer than the average American.
