Breathing Issues and Posture

As a Mississauga chiropractor for the past 16 years, I have noticed that more and more patients are coming in with forward leaning posture.   The common use of cell phones and computer use caused many patients to have the forward leaning posture.  Additionally, many patients are spending more time on their vehicles that also lead to the forward leaning posture.

The term for the forward leaning posture is hyperkyphosis.  Besides the negative visual esthetic of poor posture, which can be misread as a lack of confidence, the forward tilted posture can impede the breathing pattern of the person involved.  The rounding of our posture, dropping of our head forward makes taking a full breath difficult.  Our ribs cannot move effectively when our posture is compromised.  Poor posture can result in a decrease of our lungs’ ability to function effectively.  Additionally, researchers have observed that the forward head posture and leaning of the body forward can lead us to breath shallowly- a habit that can increase the heart rate and stress.

Many teenagers that come into our office are brought in by concerned parents complaining about their child’s poor posture.  The teenage patients will often tell me that it feels unnatural for them to straighten up their posture.  The unnatural feel of posture straightening is because the spine was compromised from years of poor posture.  The spine may require some chiropractic care to assist it in regaining its proper positioning and proper movement.

Chiropractic care is an effective way to improve a child’s growing spine.  As a chiropractor, I have seen many children and teenagers that grow up with chiropractic care carry a better posture than the average children.  In fact, I started my chiropractic care when I was 18 years old.  It’s never too early to have great spinal hygiene.

If you would like to have a chiropractic assessment or simply would like to speak with me, please feel free to contact our Mississauga chiropractic office at 905-821-4951.  The Active Family Chiropractic and Wellness Centre have been serving Mississauga for the past 16 years.  We offer family chiropractic care from infancy to adulthood.
