Nap 101

As a chiropractor in Mississauga, I’ve been fortunate to have working hours that allow me to take a nap in the middle of the afternoon.  It has been a part of my routine when I have a full day in my clinic for the past 16 years.

A nap is a great way for your mind and body to recover from fatigue and stress.  They can also boost your productivity, sharpen your mental focus and improve your problem-solving abilities.   Usually, a 20-minute nap is enough rest without the groggy feeling that can result from a longer snooze.  While it may seem counterintuitive, a break or two in the middle of a long, busy workday is a wonderful way to get the relaxation and recovery time necessary to stay focused and effective.  The following tips may be helpful to catch a little midday downtime.

  1.  Find a dark, quiet space-  Exposure to noise, and light can make it impossible to relax.  Reduce any stimuli by closing door and window shades.  You can also use earplugs and eye mask.
  2. Set an alarm-  Using an alarm timer allows you to drift off without going longer than planned.
  3. Lie down-  It’s much harder to relax and fall asleep when you’re sitting up.  A full recline produces a better recovery experience.
  4. Blanket-  a type of wrap can help to regulate your body’s temperature, which tends to decrease when you’re inactive.
  5. Meditate-  If you can’t sleep, focus on slow, deep breaths through your nose that can trigger the parasympathetic response you are after and bring a sense of serenity.

Nap is just one of the many ways to be healthier.  If you would like to ask any health-related questions, please feel free to call me at my office.
