Technology and Brain Development

When I started my practice in Mississauga 16 years ago, patients waiting in the reception area would be reading magazines, books or waiting patiently with nothing to do.  More recently, typical patients waiting will have a smartphone, either doing work on it or playing games.  On my previous blogs, I've noted the danger of using devices on the human spine.  However, research also shows that use of digital devices can affect other areas, especially with young people.

Doctors in South Korea has found young patients with brain-function issues that mimic those of aging patients or those suffering from traumatic brain injuries.  At an alarming rate, those children raised in the digital age are developing problems such as memory, reasoning, problem-solving and in-person communication.  People are less likely to memorize things that they can readily search for on Google.  Youths are especially at higher risk because their brain is still developing.

Technology use is unavoidable, but it is important to teach the next generation to use it wisely.  Here are some suggestions:

-  Read printed books rather than from a tablet.  Studies have found that reading print materials help with reading comprehension.

- Practice memorizing numbers and passwords rather than letting technology track everything.

- Play games that promote problem-solving such as board games rather than playing on the computer.
