The Tip of the Iceberg

Many of us have grown accustomed to the understanding that pain is an annoyance we need to fix, and that the absence of pain means we’re healthy. However, we need to understand that pain is more like a WARNING SIGNAL. This is our body sending us a message that there is a problem, and we need to restore it to normal. A great way to understand your pain is to think of your health as an iceberg. Your pain and symptoms are best represented as the tip of the iceberg, which is the visible area above water. Much like these visible portions, our pain is the most understandable part, which we can describe in terms of intensity, location and character. However, what we need to realize is that there’s so much more to the iceberg than what we can see or feel. Two-thirds of the iceberg is usually hidden underwater, which is the most important part of the solution when trying to understand our pain. The bottom part of the iceberg is what represents the CAUSE of our symptoms. With that in mind, it’s essential that when dealing with our bodies, it’s not only about removing the pain we feel, but also adjusting the source of the problem, even when we can’t see it ourselves. When the source of the problem is taken care of, it reduces the likelihood the symptoms (pain) would return.

This is what chiropractors do best. Chiropractors are skilled at finding the source of the problem. Chiropractic adjustments are great with reducing pain and symptoms in troublesome areas, but at the same time, the adjustments correct the dysfunctions that caused the problem in the first place. This makes chiropractic an important factor in overall health and wellness. Even though you may not be in any pain, it’s always good to get your spine checked by a chiropractor. A healthy person wouldn’t question the importance of exercise and dieting in the absence of pain. We should have the same mentality when it comes to chiropractic adjustments. So with or without pain, allow your chiropractor to help you fix the problem, even before it does its damage. It’s more than just the absence of symptoms, but we would love to see your body function the way it was meant to. We’re not mechanics, but it’s common sense: don’t wait for your car to prompt you to change the oil. Instead, the proper way to maintain your car is by scheduling regular oil changes to keep your car in tip top shape. Your body is the same way, so come visit our clinic and let us help you tune up your spine for optimal health.
