How Technology Affects Our Health

How Technology Affects Our Health,
Explained by Our Mississauga Chiropractors at Active Family Chiropractic and Wellness Centre

Digital Dementia is a condition on the rise leading to neurological decline in many people due to the overuse of technology, which can lead to the negative breakdown of cognitive/mental abilities. Current research has shown that our short-term memory pathways will be damaged because they are underutilized with excessive use of digital devices.

Technology is impeding a lot of the necessary components of development that are essential for a growing child. There are four critical factors that are necessary to achieve a proper and health childhood development. These factors include: movement, touch, human connection and exposure to nature. These all act as sensory inputs that ensure normal development of a child’s posture, and are necessary for achieving foundational skills and milestones of human development.

As an example, when children are exposed to violence through TV and video games, they react in a high state of adrenalin and stress. These physiologic signs are commonly associated with a response known as “fight or flight” or when your SYMPATHETIC nervous system is at full potential. When your body is in this state, it is signaling the person to move as a response to stimuli. Being in this stressful state without added physical exercise (ie. Sitting in front of a TV instead of being outside moving) can lead to degenerative changes in your child’s health.

Children who are overexposed to technology report persistent body sensations of overall shaking, increased breathing and heart rate, and a general state of “uneasiness”. Chronic stress associated with sitting with poor posture while interacting with technology results in a weakened immune system, developmental delays, and a higher predisposition to obesity.

The overuse of technology is on the rise, and so are the effects of prolonged use. Children have been coming into our clinics with drastic changes in their posture, and can only accelerate the degenerative process if they’re not properly educated about the negative impact of improper use of technology.
Research has shown more recent trends in the younger population; however, people of all ages are still suffering from the effects of digital dementia. In a technologically advancing society, posture is on the decline, and our Mississauga Chiropractors are here to help equip you to prevent the potential damage to your spine.
