The Connection Between Your Heart and Your Spine

The Connection Between Your Heart and Your Spine Explained by Our Mississauga, Ontario Chiropractors

February is best known as the month of love, but did you know that February is also a month of awareness? This month we’re also celebrating Heart Health Awareness Month, in hopes that everyone will know the importance of maintaining a healthy heart. Heart disease is a growing problem in our culture. Take a look at these statistics to see the effects of heart disease in our society:

  • Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada (29% of all deaths).
  • Heart disease has the second highest economic burden on our health care system (musculoskeletal disease such as BACK PAIN are #1), rising up to about $20 Billion every year in health care costs.
  • About 2.4 million Canadians aged 20 years and older live with ischemic heart disease.
  • Every 7 minutes in Canada someone dies from heart disease or stroke (which amounts to 206 people dying every day).

Important Facts about Heart Problems

It’s important that we understand the risk factors that would predispose us to heart problems. Nine in 10 Canadians have at least one risk factor for heart disease or stroke. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease. However, only 56% of women realize that heart disease is their greatest health threat. Other risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes. On top of all this, we need to realize that even the SPINE plays a huge role in allowing full function of the heart and cardiovascular system.

that Subluxation can lead to Heart Conditions

Any misalignment in the spine, called a subluxation by chiropractors, leads to changes in blood chemistry through changes in a small part of the brain that we know as the hypothalamus. When someone is subluxated, they have an increased release of stress hormones rushing into the blood. These stress hormones (known as catecholamines) are responsible for the “fight or flight” response in our body. As a result, the body goes into overdrive, working harder than it should, kind of like when you’re fighting or fleeing from a dangerous or scary situation. This is why your heart beats faster when you’re scared. This response is a direct result of increased and sustained sympathetic nervous system tone. This increased and sustained sympathetic tone is a major cause of cardiovascular events and disease!

Chiropractic plays a vital role in removing those subluxations, thereby reducing sympathetic tone by spinal adjustments, influencing the nervous system through the hypothalamus. In 2007, research showed amazing results with improving blood pressure by adjusting the upper cervical spine. Subluxations exists even if we don’t necessary feel the effects of it right away, so it’s always best to get checked by our Mississauga Chiropractors, to make sure you’re not predisposed to heart or health issues because of a misaligned spine.
