GET UP AND MOVE

Your body was meant to move! Our most recent national guidelines in Canada suggest that adults should be moving at least 150 minutes through moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week. Recent statistics are showing that only 16% of adults are engaging in enough physical activity to receive the associated health benefits. The lack of exercise obviously has its toll on the body individually, but as a nation we feel the burden it has on our health care system and our communities. To put it in perspective, in 2012 the estimated overall total health care costs of physical inactivity was a whopping $6.8 Billion.

A national report from PARTICIPACTION in 2019 outlined just how poor we are as a country in keeping active. As mentioned above, only 16% of adults in Canada are meeting the necessary requirements of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. When assigned a letter grade, this is equivalent to an *F* rating. There is new evidence supporting that ANY movement throughout the day is beneficial, but incorporating shorter bouts of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity into one’s day is even more beneficial. The weekly requirement is 150 minutes, but can be broken into smaller chunks. This means that this can be incorporated more throughout the day, even in the workplace.

Adults living in Canada should be moving more and sitting less throughout the day. Doing more moderate-to-vigorous activity can lead to greater health and fitness benefits. These benefits are of even more concern in an aging population. The greatest positive health effects that can affect the lives of many Canadians, especially as we get older, are: increased mobility, independence and cognitive wellness. Maintaining positive fitness can prevent the decline of these over time.

We understand that for many people, regular movement can be difficult, far more than the lack of time, but most especially because of the inability to move without pain or the lack of flexibility. Seeking help from a practitioner is imperative in these moments, because these are huge limitations that are stopping you from reaping VERY IMPORTANT benefits for your body. Your Mississauga Chiropractors can work with you to see where your limitations are and see what can be done to help improve your movement and structure. Look forward to a future of health, vigor and independence. GET UP AND MOVE!
