MENTAL STRESS BUSTERS

At the very core of Chiropractic, we can simplify a cause of misalignments as STRESS. And it’s far more than just thinking “I’m stressed”. And it comes in many forms and sizes, but best put we consider them as TRAUMAS, TOXINS & THOUGHTS. In other words, stress triggers us in physical, chemical and mental forms. It’s easy to understand how a PHYSICAL stress can cause certain misalignments, but negative chemical and mental stress can be just as harmful to our alignment.

MENTAL stress can keep us up late at night worrying about the experiences we’ve had for the day or anticipating what’s to come. At its worst it can easily set the tone for the rest of the day and affect how we interact with other people, often robbing us from the potential and productivity for the day. So here are some strategies to help limit the effects of mental stress and squash our negative thoughts before they ruin the day:

1. SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE – find ways to do your work more efficiently so you’re not over exerting yourself more than you should. Simplify your work space as well. Often enough we can allow clutter to accumulate around us, which has proven to add noise to our surroundings. Prepare a clean, simple environment so you can be most productive.

2. TAKE BREAKS – as work accumulates so can the stress! Take a mental break to give your brain and body a rest from all the hard work.

3. ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES – make an effort to engage in enjoyable activities even for 15 minutes in a day. Whether it’s spending time at home with your kids after a long day of work or immersing yourself in your favourite hobby, take these moments to de-stress from a busy day.

4. DEEP BREATHING – deep breathing is not only beneficial for mental stress, but also has a physiological impact on your body. It allows you to be in tune with your body and lessens negative hormonal changes in your body while keeping your mind at peace too. Close your eyes and practice deep breaths in and out while sitting in a quiet, peaceful environment, usually free from distractions. Good practice is to do this for around 5-10 minutes straight.

5. MEDITATION – you don’t have to accept a certain dogma or lifestyle in order to practice meditation. This is just an opportunity for you to find peace and to calm your mind with breathing and mindfulness. Meditation can be guided with literature, video or audio and works to turn off negative thoughts and promote more positive thoughts about yourself.

6. GRATITUDE JOURNAL – sometimes dealing with mental stress takes a shift of perspective. Often enough our negative experiences can allow negative thoughts to dwell in our minds. Try finding the gratitude in every situation. There’s usually a lesson to learn in even the most negative situations and can often make you even more grateful for everything else.

Stress in any form has its negative effects on the body. It can heighten stress hormones in our body, interrupt normal processes and even affect healing, such as suppressing our immune system. You deserve to be at your best, so seek out ways to reduce stress as much as you can.
