Ways to Combat Chronic Stress

Chronic stress takes a toll on the body, but simple changes can significantly reduce its impact. Regular exercise, such as brisk walking and swimming, resistance training, such as weightlifting, and mind-body activities, such as yoga and tai chi, lowers cortisol levels and increases endorphins. This helps enhance overall resistance to stress. Even low-intensity rhythmic movements contribute to mood improvement and relaxation.

Mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, journaling, and prayer also reduce stress and blood pressure. A specific breathing technique called the “physiological sigh” (two quick inhales followed by a slow exhale) has been shown to lower cortisol levels.

Sleep is also essential, with a recommended length of 7-8 hours per night. Sleep restores hormone balance, boosts immunity, and enhances brain function. Strong social connections are equally important, which can naturally buffer stress, reduce illness risk, and promote longevity.

Although all of these methods can reduce chronic stress, it will always be present as long as there are misalignments in the spine. Misalignments can trigger continuous stress responses, as the brain relies on spinal receptors to monitor the body’s status. Poor spinal alignment can lead to increased heart rate, anxiety, and reduced blood flow to key organs. Maintaining spinal health is vital for preventing chronic stress and supporting overall well-being.

This is why patients often feel calmer and relaxed after an adjustment – the misalignments in their spine have been adjusted, and the brain is no longer sending signals that cause chronic stress.
